Venture Incubator was born in 2000 with the mission to help young innovative companies in the early stages of development as well as to stimulate the growth of the Swiss start-up ecosystem. The idea was initiated by McKinsey and ETH Zurich, and was supported both in terms of financial and human capital by ten of Switzerland’s leading multinationals.
The Venture Incubator shareholders engaged the current team of venture capital advisors, VI Partners, in 2002 to be the active practitioners day-to-day. VI Partners are long-standing partners in the Swiss venture scene, and they are committed to selecting the best opportunities, coaching as board members, and advising Venture Incubator’s Investment Committee. Indeed, each shareholder has one representative on the Investment Committee, which not only executes the authority of investment decisions, but brings a constructive dialogue from big corporate to nascent company. This unique partnership between multi-nationals and start-ups is soon approaching twenty years of collaboration.
During the past 16 years, Venture Incubator has fulfilled its mission successfully. Over 1000 jobs have been created, and Venture Incubator participated in the financing of 46 companies with over CHF 180m for a total amount raised in excess of CHF 1bn. This was done profitably. The sales proceeds have financed 85% of all past and present portfolio companies excluding running costs.
